THE BIG DAY — After nearly a year of planning, weekend trips devoted to everything from dresses to chalk table numbers, Donovan and I are joining the many other couples who have made that leap into married life.

Everyone always says that the day goes by very fast.

I hope that there are some points throughout the day that I can take with me, some moments to take in and savor.

Personally, I hope it’s something that surprises me, this thing I remember years from now.

I don’t want every single moment to go according to plan; that’s kind of boring, after all.

I remember standing up in my sister’s wedding, nearly a decade ago. The day was stuck in fast forward, and I wasn’t even the one getting married.

People really do get caught up in the whole process, I think.

There was one thing that stuck out nine years ago: “You look gorgeous.”

Donovan popped out of nowhere, which is actually kind of hard to do given he’s more than 6 feet tall, but he managed to sneak in front of me and say this through a hug.

It’s the strongest memory I have from that day.

We had been dating for a while already, but it was still a surprising thing to hear from a man who is usually pretty quiet and reserved.

What sort of things do people remember from their wedding day? What sticks out the most? Was it a particularly good meal? Was it something someone said? Maybe it was the perfect song.

I’m curious to see what stuck with people from their big day. Email me at arobb@beenews.com and we can swap stories.

It will be weird to try on a different last name for the first couple of months, but I’m sure that just like anything, using it will come with practice and a sharp memory.

SUMMER FUN — There are still plenty of weekend events happening to make the most of our warm weather.

St. Mary’s High School will hold its classic car show and chicken barbecue from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at 142 Laverack Ave., Lancaster.

Those looking to grab a quick bite can visit Holy Mother of the Rosary Cathedral for a chicken barbecue dinner, drive-thru only, from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, Aug. 15, and Sept. 19, at 6298 Broadway, Lancaster.

CLASS REUNION — Attention St. Mary’s alums: The Class of 1959 is having its 60th reunion on June 22, 2019. Those interested in attending are asked to email Madeleine Newman at maddyn1940@gmail.com.

GET INVOLVED — The Village of Lancaster is accepting letters of interest from village residents looking to serve on the Planning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and Historic Preservation Commission.

Letters can be sent to Mayor Bill Schroeder, 5423 Broadway, Lancaster, NY 14086, or by email to wschroeder@lancastervillage.org.
